Backed by Uganda, Olara Otunnu is travelling in New York “to meet delegations and engage in interactive dialogue” with the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council, said Adonia Ayebare, Uganda’s permanent representative to the UN.

The presence of large and deep pits dug by miners has also heightened fears of accidents, particularly given the high population and continued mining activities into the night. The local administration further expressed concern that the growing population could attract the sale and consumption of illicit brews and other drugs, increasing the risk of accidents and insecurity.
