Joke: King Charles III is West Ham fan and Hammers are all gaga about having the monarch in their midst

West Ham United fans were left proclaiming that King Charles III is a fan of the club after spotting their logo on his chair.

During the Coronation ceremony where the new King was given his crown, the throne he sat on was covered in a number of marks.

One bore a resemblance to the crossed hammers on West Ham’s logo, prompting one Twitter user to take a photo and write: “West Ham are MASSIVE.”

The ‘Coronation Chair’ has been used for more than 700 years and is deemed as one of the most famous pieces of furniture in the world. Made by order of Edward I in 1269, the chair has been used for 38 coronations, and began as the place for the crowning ceremony in 1399 for Henry IV.

The markings, however, are believed to have been made by schoolboys during the 18th and 19th centuries, meaning it could actually be a West Ham logo given the club was founded in 1895.

The chair also features the engraving ‘P. Abbott slept in this chair 5-6 July 1800’ while a piece was blown off during a bomb attack in 1914.

Any hope that the King is a West Ham fan will be dampened by quotes he made in 2012.

“A consortium of my charities, including the British Asian Trust, has been working in Burnley,” he said. “Hence, some of you asked this evening whether I support a British football club and I said ‘yes, Burnley’.

“And people have responded ‘Burnley?’ Oh yes, because Burnley has been through some very challenging times and I’m trying to find ways of helping to regenerate and raise aspirations and self-esteem in that part of the world.
