Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea could be brutal with their January transfer plans, as a report has tipped them to replace summer arrival Nicolas Jackson with a top Premier League striker.

Chelsea had another big transfer window this summer, spending over £430 million to bring in 13 more players. Pochettino’s squad has been bolstered by the arrivals of stars such as Moises Caicedo, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, Axel Disasi and Jackson.

It must be noted that Chelsea were only able to go on another massive spending spree after letting a host of players leave, including Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz, Edouard Mendy and Mateo Kovacic. But other clubs will still be shocked at how Chelsea have spent over £1bn since a Todd Boehly-led consortium bought the West London outfit.

Jackson was among the new signings at Chelsea this summer, penning an eight-year contract after the Blues agreed to pay Villarreal just over £30 million for him. Jackson has arrived to become Chelsea’s new centre-forward, with Romelu Lukaku being shipped out to Roma on loan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading to Marseille permanently.

However, the Senegal international was guilty of missing a huge chance in the shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. This has prompted the Evening Standard to describe his transfer as a major ‘gamble’ from Chelsea.

The report explains how Jackson is still largely inexperienced. At the age of 22, he has plenty of learning to do. And he has only made 38 appearances in a top-five European league so far. With Chelsea demanding a successful season from Pochettino, this might prompt them to dip back into the market during the winter by snaring Ivan Toney from Brentford.

Toney was in fantastic form last term, bagging 20 goals in 33 Premier League outings. Indeed, only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane scored more times in the competition than Toney. The Bees talisman was hoping to make it into the England World Cup squad, only to be omitted amid allegations of betting rule breaches.

He has subsequently been banned from football for eight months, which means he will be out until January next year. However, Toney will aim to keep himself match fit and has vowed to come back stronger when he is allowed to play again.

Should Chelsea be happy with Toney’s level of fitness and his mentality, then they may just submit a tempting offer to try and get Brentford to sell. The 27-year-old’s current price tag is unclear, though he has previously been valued at around £60 million amid interest from Manchester United.

It would be gutting for Jackson if he is replaced by an elite striker such as Toney just six months into his spell with Chelsea. Such a move would see him relegated to the role of a benchwarmer. Jackson must therefore use this transfer talk to motivate himself and ensure he starts getting among the goals, to prevent Chelsea from having to capture another attacker at the earliest opportunity.
