New Chelsea owners said to be considering late push to hive Cristiano Ronaldo off Man United

It has been claimed that Jorge Mendes could make “one last attempt” to get Cristiano Ronaldo a move to Chelsea from Manchester United.

Ronaldo has been a pain in the ar*e in recent months as he has looked to engineer himself a move away from Man Utd.

The forward performed well for the Red Devils last term in an individual sense, as he netted 18 goals in the Premier League. But looking back now there’s a case to be made that they were worse off with him in the team.

Man Utd lost their first two games of this season but they looked better in recent wins against Liverpool and Southampton with Ronaldo on the sidelines.

The 37-year-old has been linked with clubs around Europe this summer as he looks to join a Champions League club.

Up to now, an offer has not come in though as it looks increasingly likely that Ronaldo may be forced to stay at Old Trafford until January at the earliest. Fabrizio Romano did suggest earlier this week though that it is still worth “keeping an eye on Ronaldo” after United signed Antony from Ajax:

“Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, Antony and of course, Cristiano Ronaldo… But five does not go into three,” Romano told Caught Offside.

“Keep an eye on Ronaldo until the end of the window. Let’s see what happens, but when it comes to Antony, Erik ten Hag views him as a regular starter but has already told Manchester United’s attackers that he will frequently rotate.”

Chelsea were one of the first clubs linked with Ronaldo earlier this summer but they decided against pursuing him.

The Blues are instead looking to sign ex-Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has fallen down the pecking order at FC Barcelona.

But journalist Ben Jacobs has now hinted that Mendes (Ronaldo’s agent) could reach out to Chelsea before the window closes to look to seal the player’s Man Utd exit:

“It wouldn’t remotely surprise me, should Aubameyang not arrive, if Jorge Mendes makes one last attempt to get Chelsea to sign Cristiano Ronaldo,” Jacobs told Talk Chelsea’s Simon Phillips.

“Thomas Tuchel’s position hasn’t changed, but Chelsea’s attack hasn’t yet been as free-scoring or fluid as he would have hoped.

“A loan move for Ronaldo would add instant goals. He would also arguably be a better fit in Tuchel’s system than under Erik ten Hag.

“But it’s still a long shot because Chelsea’s American owners, however ambitious (and intrigued by Ronaldo), won’t force any player on Tuchel.”
