Despite its rich and illustrious past, Kenya’s most popular football team AFC Leopards Sports Club may have lost all evidence of its glory of years gone by. The club that has won 13 premier league titles, 11 football association (FA) shield / cup trophies and five East and Central African federation Associations (Cecafa) trophies cannot trace where the trophies have been kept – if at all. Former club captain and official Peter Lichungu says in startling revelations that some of the trophies may have been stolen by former club officials, captains and debtors to force as a way of forcing the club to pay them outstanding dues. Some past officials, captains and debtors have since died, further throwing confusion the whereabouts of documents that stored important information about the club. As it stands, the club has no documented history that can be used to attract investors or sponsors. Consequently, AFC Leopards’ history and identity are gradually being lost to the point few fans identify with the club. Worried, Lichungu warns that unless the trophies and documents are traced at stored in a secure place, AFC Leopards’ history, which synonymous with the development of the sport in Kenya’s.
