Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was blown away by teenager Rico Lewis during the 3-2 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round, saying the club are lucky to have him for many years to come.

The 18-year-old put in an all-action display at right-back and battled well against a strong Reds side, which saw Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez starting in attack.

Lewis has already made three substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and has both started and scored in the Champions League, but his star has risen as high as ever after the win on Thursday night.

“Long, long time ago I didn’t see a performance like Rico Lewis, long long time ago,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. 18 years old, playing against Liverpool with the big stars up front. The way he played with the ball and without the ball, we are incredibly lucky to have this player for the next decade, I’m pretty sure. Hopefully the club can take him, because he was exceptional, the game he played was exceptional.”

Former Manchester City and England right-back Micah Richards was equally impressed by the teenager, tipping him for greatness in the years to come for the lad from Bury.

“He was brilliant,” Richards told Sky Sports. “The positions he was picking up, pressing high, the way he was getting on the ball. His decision-making was outstanding, the timing of his challenges, when to get involved. He’s just brilliant. For someone so young, local lad, just 18, I think he’s going to be a superstar.”
