Kenyan runners claimed both the men’s and women’s marathon titles at the 21st Kigali International Peace Marathon held in Rwanda’s capital Kigali on Sunday.
In the men’s marathon, Kenya’s Kephar Namutala crossed the finish line first in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 19 seconds, followed by compatriot Shadrack Kimining in 2:15:18. Ivyne Jeruto won the women’s marathon in 2:35:35, while Ethiopia’s Tegest Ymer finished second in 2:36:15.
Kenya also claimed victory in the men’s half marathon, with Amos Kirui taking first place in 1:04:16.
Uganda’s Oscar Kibet finished four seconds behind in second, while Kenya’s Zakariah Gacugu completed the podium in 1:04:31.
Rwanda swept the podium in the women’s half marathon, with Angelique Ibishatse securing victory in 1:13:29.
Organised annually by the Rwanda Athletics Federation in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, the event promotes peace, unity and athletic excellence through sport.
According to organizers, more than 5,000 runners from 65 countries and regions participated in the Run for Peace, while over 4,000 athletes registered for the full and half marathon races.
