Police in Nyando Sub-County, Kisumu County, have arrested two drug trafficking suspects and recovered 23 stones bhang, whose value is yet to be determined.
According to a police statement, the suspects, a Kenyan driver and a Ugandan passenger, were travelling in a lorry and tried to dodge a police roadblock after it was flagged down at Ahero town along the Kisumu-Kericho highway.
The vehicle was eventually intercepted and suspects arrested at Ngere on Kisumu-Kericho highway following a high-speed chase.
“The driver sped off but was pursued and intercepted at Ngere. In the vehicle were 23 packs of bhang,” the statement said.
The narcotics, which were concealed in yellow polythene bags, were confiscated and preserved as exhibit.
Both suspects are currently remanded as the exhibits await weighing and sampling ahead of arraignment in court.
The confiscation is part of a broader regional crackdown on drugs and illicit brews that has seen authorities seize and destroy thousands of litres of illegal drugs and contraband liquor.
Police have vowed to maintain a zero-tolerance approach to traffickers, regardless of status, in pursuit of a safer and drug-free country.
