Kenya national team Harambee Stars and former AFC Leopards defender Collins Sichenje is edging closer to a high-profile move to English Championship side Charlton Athletic from Serbian outfit FK Vojvodina.
The proposed deal will see Vojvodina receive approximately Ksh300,000,000 in transfer fees, with the agreement also including a 20 per cent sell-on clause that will guarantee the Serbian club benefits from any future transfer involving the Kenyan international.
If completed, the transfer would mark one of the most lucrative deals involving a Kenyan player and highlight the rising presence of Kenyan talent in European football.
Shichenje joined Swedish top-tier side AIK Fotboll from Kenya Premier League side AFC Leopards. After impressing in Sweden, he moved to Serbian side FK Vojvodina.
The move from Serbia to England presents contrasting fortunes for Kenyan players who seeks greener pastures in paid ranks in Europe.
Shichenje who went through Kakamga High School before joining AFC Leopards youth team, which promoted to the senior team as holding midfielder.
He has enjoyed a roller-coaster stay in Serbia compared to his former team-mate at AFC, Austin Odhiambo, who for the past three years has flattered to deceive.
Odhiambo, who has seen several attempts to move to Europe flop mainly owing to indiscipline, recently joined a nondescript Lebanese Premier League club Nejmeh in the Middle East from Gor Mahia.
Another Gor Mahia player Benson Omalla has seen attempts paid ranks in Morocco and Syria collapse.
Charlton Athletic, a former English Premier team currently lies 19th on a 24-team log of the English Championship – a second tier competition after the premier league.
Kenyans rmbr Charlton Athletic as the tam another AFC Leopards midfielder Iddi Abubakr played the mid-1980s.
