Jurgen Klopp will miss Liverpool’s game against Southampton this weekend after the Football Association successfully appealed the decision to only fine the manager for his furious rant towards a match official.

The German was initially fined £30,000 by an independent regulatory commission over his conduct towards officials during the game against Manchester City on October 16. The FA though felt that the punishment on Klopp was too lenient, and an independent appeal board has suspended the Liverpool boss from the touchline with immediate effect. 

It means he will miss Liverpool’s last game before the World Cup, when they host Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. Klopp was sent off in the 86th minute of his side’s 1-0 win on October 16 for confronting assistant referee Gary Beswick in a furious reaction to a foul not been given for a challenge on Mohamed Salah by Bernardo Silva.

The German admitted to “losing it” but insisted he had not sworn at Beswick. Asked the day after the fine whether he felt it was a fair punishment, Klopp responded:

“Should I have got a ban? I don’t know. I never was in the situation, I never had a red card, I didn’t ever have a yellow card as far as I know. I’m the wrong person that you should ask. I have no idea about what the usual things are. I had a touchline ban years ago in the Champions League with (Borussia) Dortmund, very similar situation, but obviously the Champions League is slightly different.

“I know what I said, and I know that saying that, but from a further distance and with a different face, it would have been completely fine. I said “how can you not, how can you not? I think the most expensive face, I’m not sure in the world, but at least here. I think it’s a lot of money but I heard it will be invested for something good, and that’s fine.”

Klopp and Liverpool won the game 1-0 but nearly a month after the clash on October 16, the German has been punished following the appeal into his furious rant towards an official. The Friday after the game between the two Premier League giants, the FA confirmed their decision to appeal.

In a statement they wrote: “The FA can confirm that it is appealing against the independent Regulatory Commission’s sanction in relation to the recent case involving Jurgen Klopp after reviewing its written reasons.

“The independent Regulatory Commission fined Jurgen Klopp £30,000 for breaching FA Rule E3 during Liverpool FC’s Premier League game on Sunday 16 October 2022 against Manchester City FC.”

The FA launched the “Enough Is Enough” campaign in September which is aimed at stamping out abuse at all levels of the game.

It is understood the FA feels elite-level managers have an example to set to the grassroots game in terms of what is acceptable behaviour.
