A General Service Unit (GSU) officer accused of fatally shooting a 45-year-old nurse outside the Eldoret State Lodge will remain in custody for an additional 21 days, an Eldoret court has ruled.

Chief Magistrate Peter Ndwiga on Tuesday ordered that the suspect, Nathan Kirwa, who is attached to the security detail of Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, be escorted to Naiberi Police Station pending completion of investigations into the murder of Dorris Murei, popularly known as Dori.

Delivering his ruling, Chief Magistrate Ndwiga granted the prosecution’s request to detain the suspect further, stating: “I have granted the prayers sought by the investigating officer to detain the suspected killer for 21 days to enable him to complete investigations into murder of the nurse.”

The Investigating Officer, Police Constable Edwin Chirchir, moved to court seeking orders to hold the suspect longer, arguing that investigations are far from complete.

In his application, Chirchir told the court: “Your honour, we are requesting that PC Kirwa, who was attached to the security detail of Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, be held at Naiberi police station for at least 21 days.”

Chirchir informed the court that investigators are yet to record statements from nine key witnesses, including GSU officers who were present at the scene of the fatal shooting on the fateful evening.

He further revealed that the pistol, magazines, ammunition and mobile phone seized from the suspect during his arrest are yet to undergo forensic analysis.

The court also heard that the suspect poses a flight risk if released on bond after it emerged that by the time he was arrested on Kapseret-Eldoret bypass, he was still heavily armed.

Kirwa was arrested on August 31 following a six-hour manhunt after the murder of Murei, who was allegedly shot multiple times inside a bar on Sunday, August 30.

According to police, the suspect arrived at the establishment while armed with a concealed firearm before allegedly walking directly towards the slain nurse and opening fire.

Uasin Gishu Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the tragic incident and recounted the sequence of events during a media interview on Monday.

“He went directly to the location of the lady whose name is Dorris Murei and who is popularly known here as Dori and began shooting her. He shot the deceased five times. She died on the spot,” explained Sichirani.

The matter is slated for mention before the Chief Magistrate’s Court on September 23, 2026.
