County administrator calls for enhanced security and adherence to mining laws for faster economic growth

Aroo Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Dennis Barasa has called for peaceful coexistence, enhanced security, and strict adherence to mining regulations to support sustainable development in the area.

Aroo Sub County, Barasa said the residents stand to benefit from the minerals by observing safety measures and called upon them to abide by the law.

The forum brought together local residents, stakeholders and representatives from Kaliao Construction and Supplies Ltd to deliberate on proposed mining activities and community participation.

Turkana County Mining Deputy Director Elim Areman emphasised the need for responsible and inclusive mining practices, noting that land belongs to the community and investors must work closely with local residents to ensure mutual benefit.

He further underscored the importance of environmental conservation, adherence to safety measures, and community ownership in safeguarding local interests ensuring that communities benefit from mining investments.

The engagement also gave Kalomwae and Juluk residents an opportunity to express their views, concerns and expectations regarding the proposed mining activities, with leaders reaffirming the County Government’s commitment to transparency and community involvement in the sector.

Elim said the county government will continue to promote responsible mining practices aimed at creating economic opportunities and improving livelihoods for local communities across the county.

Others present included Eregae Micklam (Chairman of the Turkana Artisanal Mining Committee), Ekal Lokuruka (County Legal Officer), OCS Aroo Subcounty, Alfred Lomodei (Aroo Sub-County Administrator) and Erod Wilfred, (Revenue Officer).
