People living near wetlands, game reserves and parks have been challenged to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of these habitats to continuously attract tourists and potential investors.

Environmental conservationist Francis Oyucho, speaking at Ndere Island in Seme, Kisumu County, noted that wetlands, game reserves and parks offer significant employment opportunities for youth if properly conserved and protected.

Oyucho pointed out that investors and tourists are drawn to these areas due to their aesthetic beauty, with many willing to pay for tours. “The celebration today to protect wetlands, including Boran, Siana, and Ogera, stems from the value these areas hold. We urge our people to prioritize conservation so our tourist attractions remain appealing and our visitors are satisfied,” Oyucho said.

He further highlighted the importance of the youth employed as tour guides, who benefit from the tourism revenue generated by these natural attractions. Oyucho also commended the officers at Ndere Game Reserve for fostering peaceful coexistence between wild animals and local residents.

However, he condemned emerging fishing practices where fishermen clear vegetation in wetlands, noting that this destroys the natural habitat for mudfish species and increases human-wildlife conflicts.

Local Soti Beach Unit Chair Chrispine Otieno Anyango led residents in declaring to protect the lake habitat.

Protecting wetlands and parks not only preserves biodiversity but also ensures sustainable economic opportunities for local communities through tourism and conservation-driven employment, Anyago said.
