Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner to secure a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage in their final Premier League game before the World Cup break on Sunday.

Man United are three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham having played a game less in the Premier League.

After the match, United boss Erik Ten Hag observed, “I think we have a base. We’re going in the right direction, the culture has changed. The attitude has changed and that’s good. We have also improved. We have got a better mentality and you saw that today with the winner in the last minute.

“We are now united, we have togetherness. The dressing room, the staff, the directors, the whole club and the fans. I’m really happy with that development.”

Christian Eriksen scored the opener in the 14th minute, sliding in at the far post to steer the ball home after Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes combined cleverly to create the chance.

The home side equalised in the 61st minute with a goal eerily similar to Manchester United’s as winger Willian played Tom Cairney free down the right and he centred for ex-United winger Daniel James to score two minutes after he came off the bench.

Ten Hag said of the attitude change at Old Trafford, “In the last week we had some good choices with subs coming in and having a big impact. It’s a massive win, it’s really important and I’m very happy with it.”

He also praised match-winner Garnacho.

He said, “It’s a big skill (confidence and arrogance) that he has. But it’s always finding the balance. He can perform under stress and he came in and performed well like he did on Thursday.”

Fulham manager Marco Silva, speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s the second game in a row [conceding in the last minute]. We didn’t deserve that result. First half we were trying to control the game, we were more on the front foot but we know the players and the quality they have.

“In the second half we knew it would be hard to control the game always but that was our plan, to play our way. We reacted really well after their goal and our second half was really good.

“We created chances from the first minute of the second half and scored a good goal, a good offensive transition.

“But then the second goal, we cannot concede goals like that. We worked so hard to try and get a result. We have to be proud of the team and how they played but it is hard to take.”
