Irene Engefu, a 42 year old woman is on the run after murdering her father Hezbon Mudanya, 79, at Chamasirihi Village in Sabatia Sub-County in Vihiga County.
The incident happened on March 10, 2026 evening.
In an interview, Chief Evans Endesia of Izava North Location said he received s distress call from a village elder about the murder incident and rushed to the home to confirm the same and call in the police.
“On arrival at the home, I was informed that the old man was relaxing when all of a sudden the daughter attacked and stabbed him in the neck with a kitchen knife,” Endesia said.
He narrated that the victim tried to call for help, but he collapsed and took his last breath.
Endesia said Engefu had returned home from Mombasa two weeks earlier, but the family had noticed that she was not in her right frame of mind. There had been no quarrel in the family that could have caused such extreme violence.
The chief said the woman was on the run and that there was need for her to be arrested and taken for mental assessment to determine whether she is in her right frame of mind to prevent her from committing more crimes. He appealed to residents who may know of her whereabouts to alert the police.
Speaking to the press, Irene’s mother Nifreda Mudanya said her daughter had earlier prepared breakfast and informed her that she would go to Mbale Town but promised to return home as soon as possible.
“I proceeded to the farm to harvest grass for livestock when a distraught grandchild came running to where I was and pleaded with me to rush home because his grandfather was in a bad state,” Mudanya narrated.
Mudanya said upon arrival in the compound, she was shocked to find her husband on the ground with a stab wound on his neck and struggling to breathe.
The body of the deceased was taken to the mortuary pending post-mortem.
