Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kirimi Kaberia, three former government officials and two company directors over misappropriation of Ksh330 million set aside for preparations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

The accused persons who appeared in court are former Sports Principal Secretary Kaberia, former Senior Principal Finance Officer in the Ministry of Sports Stephen Njoroge Muthuma; former Principal Accountant Enock Ondwari Onditi, former Senior Superintendent Engineer John Kiende Ruga; a director of Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited Samuel Mbaa Njoroge and Anthony Mwangi Kimanthi – a director of Lease Pride Limited.

The accused appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Isabella Barasa at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court for plea taking. The charges followed investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) after the DPP approved the prosecution.

The case involves 16 accused persons, including individuals and companies, who face a total of 17 counts. The accused were charged with abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, failure to comply with procurement laws, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.

Kaberia, Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, Harun Chebet Komen, Enock Onditi Ondwari, John Kiende Ruga, Marcos Gonzales Puente, Auditel Kenya and Samuel Mbaa Njoroge faced an additional charge of conspiracy to commit an economic crime.

Prosecution, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Norah Achieng assisted by Principal Prosecution Counsel Kennedy Panyako and Prosecution Counsel Thelma Nanjaya did not oppose the release of the accused on bond and bail.

The court granted Ksh3 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail to Amb. Kaberia, Stephen Njoroge, Enock Onditi, John Kiende, Anthony Mwangi and Lease Pride Limited.

Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, Taxwise Consulting Limited and Liroma Assurance Services Limited were each granted Ksh2 million bond or Ksh600,000 cash bail

All the accused denied the charges and the court ordered them to surrender their passports within seven days. The case will be mentioned on 15th September 2026.
