Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge placed 16 in Cape Town race that produced fastest marathon ever run on African soil
Fellow Ethiopian Yihunilign Adane was second in 2:04:59 while Kenya’s Kalipus Lomwai finished third in 2:05:06. The first 10 men all finished inside the previous course record in what organisers described as the strongest marathon field ever assembled in Africa.

Faith Kipyegon appeared to struggle midway through the race and failed in her attempt to shave at least 7.65 seconds off her world record. To achieve the feat, Kipyegon would have needed to run each of her four laps an average of about two seconds faster.

The 39-year-old Kipchoge started among the frontrunners but faded before the 20km mark, clutching his side as challengers streamed ahead of him. After the race he said back pain had overwhelmed him and made him stop.
