Mau Mau veterans warn rising political rhetoric in Kenya is likely to inflame inter-ethnic hostility
Mau Mau veterans under Mau Mau Original Trust have called on political class in Kenya to tone down the rising political rhetoric and expressed fears it is likely to fuel inter-ethnic hostility.
Speaking in Narok during their annual general meeting, the elders led by deputy chairman Daniel Kamau, called on politicians to respect the office of the president despite their political differences.
“We are calling on the youths and political class to respect the current office holders right from the president, down to assistant chiefs. That is the only way we can contain the political tension,” Kamau said.
He urged the Generation Z (Gen Z or youth) to use the right channels to air their grievances.
Additionally, a member of the Mau Mau Original Trust Stephen Wainaina appealed to the government to provide adequate security to their offices, which have become target of attacks following a recent incident in which they were invaded by unknown people.
“We are appealing for round-the-clock security as Mau Mau veterans. The recent attacks on our offices were uncalled for and are a threat to us,” Wainaina pointed out.
The Mau Mau fighters also want the government to fast-track their compensation to ensure they benefit from the atrocities meted out to them by British colonial administration.
