Benjamin Mendy has been released by Man City as he faces a retrial for rape.

City has not published their released players’ list yet – but Mendy has appeared on the list of players let go by the Manchester side on the Premier League website.  The footballer had been found not guilty of six rapes and one sexual assault against four women in January.

Jurors could not reach verdicts on one count of rape and one of attempted rape against two other alleged victims after 67 hours and 17 minutes of deliberations.

Mendy Signed for City in 2017 but managed just 75 appearances in all competitions across six seasons. He was suspended by the Sky Blues last season as he stood trial. The French defender played no role in City’s historic treble-winning season this year. Mendy was found not guilty at a trial six months ago.

The 28-year-old was accused by prosecutors of being a “predator” who “turned the pursuit of women for sex into a game”. Mendy also allegedly locked his victims in a “panic room” and hid their phones so they couldn’t escape.

On the day, Mendy’s lawyer said he was “delighted” to have been cleared of sex attacks and “look forward” to clearing his name at re-trial.
