Inter ace Romelu Lukaku backs ex-Arsenal star Thierry Henry to take over as Belgium head coach

Romelu Lukaku has said that Thierry Henry should be the man to replace Roberto Martinez as the head coach of the Belgium national team. Martinez left his role following Belgium’s disappointing early World Cup exit and the Inter Milan striker believes one of his assistants is the next man in line.

Henry has worked with Belgium, in two separate stints, under Martinez and Lukaku believes this gives him an advantage. Speaking to Sky Italia, Lukaku made no attempt at hiding his opinion on the future of his national side.

Lukaku said, “For me Henry is the next coach of Belgium. There are no doubts. I say it openly: he will be the next coach.”

The 29-year-old continued, “He has the respect of all the players, he has won everything. He knows how to coach; he knows what we have to do to get there. He knows the team, the league, the staff.”

Arsenal’s record top-scorer has experience of leading a side with head coach stints at Monaco and Montreal Impact, now CF Montreal. Lukaku summed up his feelings by saying:

“For me he is the ideal coach for our national team.”

If Lukaku’s wish were to come true then this job would see Henry given a completely new challenge by taking over a national team.

Belgium begin their Euro qualifying campaign in March when they take on Sweden. The Red Devils will be hoping to put the World Cup behind them and quickly get back to their best.

With Belgium’s “golden generation” coming to an end, the next head coach will have their work cut out to get the best out of the side.
