Financial Times: Kenyan court halts Adani takeover of the East African nation’s international airport

Kenya’s high court temporarily halted plans to transfer the management of Nairobi’s main airport to India’s Adani Group, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

The court’s decision to suspend the $1.85 billion agreement between the government and India’s Adani Airport Holdings Ltd was announced on Monday.

The order blocks a government proposal to grant Adani a 30-year lease to operate Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, East Africa’s largest aviation hub, the report said.

The Adani Group did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Last month, Kenya’s main aviation union Kenya Aviation Workers Union called for a strike over the proposed deal, saying that it will lead to job losses and bring in non-Kenyan workers.

Financial Times reports, “The order blocks a government proposal to grant the infrastructure-focused company owned by Gautam Adani, India’s second-richest man, a 30-year lease to operate Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.”

The proposed takeover spurred protests when it was revealed in July and the Kenya Aviation Workers Union also opposed the plans, which it argued would lead to job cuts and employment of foreigners.

This deal would have granted Adani the right to operate Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for 30 years. The court’s order prohibits any implementation of the deal until further rulings are made.
