Refugee ration cuts in Uganda risk long-term social damage as host nation mulls border closure
Increasingly threadbare aid budgets mean many of the 1.5 million refugees in the country – one of the world’s largest refugee-hosting nations – are now receiving less than 40 per cent of their basic survival rations, while others are getting less or nothing at all.
Father to son: When Ugandan Ogre is eating his children only his Brat and hangers-on get nod into the kraal
In my book Political and Leadership History of Uganda: From British Colonial Era to Movement Era, which has been in the press since July 2023, I unequivocally state that the political trajectory of Uganda will be determined, not by the genuine citizens of Uganda but by three men: Lawyer Nobert Mao (no relation the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba (from last week the Chief of Defense Forces, CDF) and Tibuhaburwa Museveni (still the president of Uganda, 38 years since capturing the instruments of power through the barrel of the gun on January 25, 1986). The three, I wrote, will strategise together to de-enfranchise Ugandans, transfer the power of selecting a president of Uganda to parliament and ensure that the current president, retains power, not through the popular vote but through the members of parliament who to date profess NRM.
Water: Kenyans in semi-arid regions turn to sand dams on seasonal rivers to trap surface runoff
Many people in Kenya’s dry southeastern region rely on boreholes and rivers for water, but many boreholes produce saline water and permanent rivers are few and far for most people. Earth dams are another source, but they’re also few and require regular desilting.

‘I’d never be happy to see foreign boots in my country but in current situation Haiti is a sort of prison’
Once financed by the elites who were keen for their muscle to secure votes, get protection against enemies or prevent robberies in companies located near the slums, Haitian gangs now rely on extortion, kidnapping, so-called “taxes”, and arms and drug trafficking to make money.
Haiti in-depth 2: Haitian solution doesn’t mean we can’t get support, we know some of our limitations

Haiti in-depth: A transition beset by challenges, uncertainty, agenda and tone set by gangs
Complicating matters is the fact that backing the deployment of thousands of foreign security forces to help quell the gangs is a prerequisite for membership on the council – a plan drawn up last week by the regional Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in conjunction with US officials, Haiti’s main political groups, and key members of Haitian civil society and the diaspora.
Environmental militarisation: Rhetoric about independence in Uganda conceals the truism that civic spaces are polluted by military choices
It is no longer a secret that President Tibuhaburwa Museveni despises Uganda’s civilians who depend directly on the land for their livelihoods or have origins in the land based indigenous groups of Bantu and Luo. Naturally he is more attracted to the nomadic pastoral communities, but not those who are not Tutsi-Hima. He has made sure that virtually all institutions of government in all civic spaces and non-civic spaces (army, police) are predominantly governed by people of Tutsi-Hima ethnicity. People from other ethnicities are left in specific positions to serve second fiddle to these ones.
