Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience: Hydrological survey on proposed boreholes in northwestern Kenya concludes

Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP) has successfully completed a countywide geophysical and hydrogeological survey for 27 proposed borehole sites under Batch II across seven sub counties in Turkana.

Turkana South has eight proposed sites, Turkana West six, Loima five, Turkana East four, Turkana Central two while Turkana North and Kibish each has one proposed site.

The survey assists in identifying the most suitable locations with the highest potential for greatest and most sustainable yield.

It also enabled experts to estimate the depth of groundwater aquifers, assess their potential yields, and significantly reduce the risk of drilling dry or low-yield boreholes.

By applying scientific and evidence-based methods before drilling commences, the project is expected to enhance the efficiency of water infrastructure investments while ensuring communities benefit from dependable and sustainable water sources.

With the survey now complete, the project will proceed to the next phase, which involves drilling and developing boreholes at the most viable sites identified during the assessment.

Upon completion, the new water points are expected to improve access to clean and safe water for households, schools, health facilities, and livestock, particularly in underserved and drought-prone areas of the county.

The Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project continues to complement the County Government of Turkana’s efforts to strengthen water security and build resilience to effects of climate change through sustainable groundwater development.

The initiative underscores the importance of scientific planning and modern hydrogeological techniques in delivering long-term water solutions that improve livelihoods, support economic development, and enhance the well-being of communities across Turkana County.
