Newly expanded 425-bed wing at Mutuini Level IV Hospital has received state-of-the-art medical equipment, marking a major step toward full operationalisation.

A key figure in the successful rollout of the project is Nairobi County Chief Executive Officer Martin Wekesa Wafula, who played a central role in overseeing equipment installation, verification and operational readiness of the facility.

Dr Wafula – who previously earned recognition for his performance in Nairobi County’s health facilities revamp – has been praised for his hands-on leadership and results-driven approach.

The upgrade includes critical installations such as three fully equipped operating theatres, dialysis machines, a modern laboratory and a CT scan unit, positioning the hospital as a key referral facility expected to ease congestion in Nairobi hospitals.

Nairobi city County Governor Johnson Sakaja, who has consistently championed the expansion and modernisation of county health facilities, described the project as a fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to deliver accessible and dignified healthcare to city dwellers of Dagoretti, Kawangware, Riruta and surrounding areas.

The Mutuini Hospital upgrade forms part of his broader agenda to strengthen all Level IV and Level V hospitals in Nairobi through infrastructure renewal and professional management.

The project has also benefited from close collaboration between the county and national government, with Sakaja repeatedly emphasising that the goal is not just construction, but full functionality and service delivery for wananchi.

At Mutuini, he has led efforts to ensure new equipment is properly audited and installed, while strengthening service delivery systems in preparation for full-scale operations.

According to county documents, Dr Wafula has built a reputation in Nairobi’s health administration for improving accountability, patient-centred care and operational efficiency across facilities he has previously managed, including previous roles within county hospitals.

Once fully operational, Mutuini Hospital expansion is expected to serve thousands of patients daily and significantly reduce pressure on overburdened referral hospitals, marking one of the most visible milestones in Governor Sakaja’s ongoing health sector reforms.
