As Africa faces extraordinary geopolitical changes with its sovereignty on trial, the continent requires not just resilience but visionary leadership and capable institutions to b in-step with the global economic and technological changes.

African leaders have recently met in Johannesburg for the first edition of their executive management programme in partnership with Wits School of Governance where during the deep reflection and discussions were based on economic transformation, global health systems, and the role of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to be used in shaping the future of governance.

However besides the critical topics addressed, this programme highlighted something even more profound; the power of African institutions of higher learning.

The African Union Development Agency (AUDA) NEPAD Chief Executive Officer Nardos Bekele-Thomas expressed hope towards African universities stating that they are not just centres of academic pursuit but also engines of new ideas, analytical capacity, and evidence-based policymaking.

She lauded the strong partnership between (AUDA) NEPAD and the Wits School of Governance terming the relationship as a living testimony of what happens when policy and practical experience combine with academic expertise.

“This great combination creates a platform where knowledge is translated into effective governance, empowering leaders who can steer intricacies, rally populations and drive reforms that truly respond to the needs of our citizens” she said.

According to the chief executive officer, the real value of this initiative isn’t in a degree, but in the relationships built and the perspectives exchanged.

“These are the tools that will influence governance across several countries and institutions, because leadership in the public sector carries a profound responsibility as the decisions made today shapes tomorrow’s economic and social opportunities.

She at the same time applauded the leaders who committed themselves to complete the executive management programme noting that their gained vast experience will go a long way in shaping those institutions that drive Africa’s development.

“Together, through collaborative leadership and a sustained commitment to reform, Africa is advancing towards attaining the vision of Agenda 2063 and building a more peaceful world,” Bekele-Thomas said.
