Garissa County security team has impounded 1,280 litres of contraband petrol valued at Ksh200,000. The fuel is suspected to have been smuggled into Kenya from neighbouring Somalia.
The police arrested one person who will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete, the security team said.
Garissa County Commissioner, Mohamed Mwabudzo, said the fuel was being transported in a Toyota saloon car – registration number KDR 145E – which was intercepted by police following a tip-off from members of the public.
The arrest comes barely a week after the same security team closed down two illegal fuel outlets in Garissa Town.
“We have intercepted at least 60 20-litre jerricans full of contraband petrol, worth more than Ksh200,000, which was destined for sale to local market,” Mwabudzo said.
He warned that the crackdown on contraband goods would continue until smuggling is completely eradicated.
“Woe unto those who think they can successfully import illegal goods into this county. They will lose because we will arrest them and seize all contraband goods,” he added.
Mwabudzo reaffirmed that the County Security Team is committed to stopping all illegal business activities, particularly those involving goods from across the Somali border. He said the team will ensure that those involved in smuggling face full legal action.
The county commissioner told Garissa residents to cooperate with authorities and report any illegal trade to support the fight against contraband, noting that such efforts will protect both consumers and legitimate businesses.
