Vihiga County has taken a bold step towards ensuring food and nutrition security for its residents with the signing of the Food and Nutrition Security Bill, 2025 into law.
Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo signed the historic legislation, marking a significant milestone in the county’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of local people.
The new law is set to revolutionise food and nutrition security in Vihiga by establishing robust coordination structures and giving priority to critical issues in county planning. By aligning with the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the law seeks to improve access to nutritious food, enhance health outcomes and mobilise resources for sustainable food systems.
Governor Ottichilo highlighted the transformative potential of the law, noting that “healthcare systems without nutrition cannot work.” He underlined the importance of embedding nutrition into governance systems to ensure every citizen’s right to adequate food and nutrition.
Developed in partnership with Nutrition International, the law is expected to create a sustainable, secure food system that benefits all residents, especially the most vulnerable. The new law is expected to pave the way for a healthier, more productive Vihiga County, where food security is a reality for every individual.
