One person died and three others sustained injuries at an old well in Kathozweni Sub-County where they had gone to fetch water when the walls caved in.
The incident occurred on Londokwe River in Thavu Village, Kathozweni Ward on Saturday, as residents drew water from the well.
Confirming the incident, County Executive for Health Services Joyce Mutua said, “Upon receiving the report, the department’s emergency response team was immediately deployed to the scene with an ambulance.
“Four women were rescued and rushed to the Makueni County Referral Hospital (MCRH) for emergency care. However one of the victims, who had been critically injured, succumbed to the injuries upon arrival. The other three are in stable condition and are receiving medical attention at the hospital,” said Mutua, in a signed press statement sent to the media.
She said that rescue efforts continue at the scene to establish whether there could be more casualties. The emergency team has a standby ambulance and emergency personnel to provide any further support that may be needed.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured persons a full and speedy recovery,” said Mutua.
