Child neglect, teen pregnancy incidence rise among pastoralists in Kenya’s Kajiado County
Neglect accounted for the highest number at 3,753 cases, where children have parents, but are denied basic needs. Abandonment followed with 162 cases of minors left without any guardian or caregiver. Other cases included 552 of custody disputes, 25 of child marriages, 19 of teenage pregnancy, 13 of sexual assault, five of child labour and four of female genital mutilation.

In Belgut Sub-County, 932 teenage girls were impregnated, while in Bureti Sub-County, 541 were impregnated between January 2025 and July 2021 – the highest number. Further, the gender officer reported that 3,331 teenage girls were pregnant across six sub-counties of Kericho during the same period.
After years of high teenage pregnancy incidence Kisumu County in Lake Victoria Basin sees steep decline
In 2021, Kisumu County reported 21,314 pregnancies in this age group and by 2024, the figure had fallen to 9,773. Teen pregnancies among older adolescents (15-19 years) also declined consistently over the same period from 314,534 in 2020 to 231,024 in 2024, a drop of 26.6 per cent.
