China grapples with bulging numbers of aging countryside, made worse by equally aging caregivers
By the end of 2025, China had 320 million people aged 60 or above, accounting for 23 per cent of the population. In recent years, the country has expanded its rural eldercare network. As of June 2024, there were about 16,000 rural homes for the elderly with 1.68 million beds, along with roughly 145,000 mutual-aid eldercare facilities.
