Directors heading sections and units at the national government ministries have been asked to make monthly reviews of their performance targets to facilitate attainment of set goals.
The Principal Secretary for National Government Coordination Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary Ahmed Ibrahim said it is important for the directors to make continuous review of their performance targets to ease achievement of goals they committed themselves for.
“What gets measured is done, what is not measured is not done. The objective of performance contract is to ensure performance is measured and is growth oriented,” said Ibrahim, while advising the directors to come up with marking tools that can enable them to see competence development.
He said all public servants should demonstrate the willingness to perform well in their assignments, noting that those who still want to remain in the comfort zone should get out of the zones as their lack of commitment to achieve targets makes ministries and departments to perform dismally.
Ibrahim was addressing directors from the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy during a Performance Contract Vetting for Financial Year 2025/2026 exercise at the Ministry’s Headquarters at Teleposta Towers, Nairobi.
He has been visiting ministries to check on the quality of performance contracts that are being set by ministries and to give further input.
Ibrahim, who was flanked by the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke and his ICT and digital economy counterpart John Tanui said the ministry of information, communications and the digital economy is key in regards to the pillars it was implementing.
The principal secretary observed that the performance contract objective is to ensure that every individual in the system is playing their part for the improvement of their ministry in service delivery.
“We must show that we are moving up to provide service delivery to the public, which should start with individuals,” Ibrahim stated.
He added, “I am confident you will do better if only you demonstrate the willingness to perform well in executing your responsibilities and duties efficiently and effectively in providing services to the public,” he said.
At the same time, he urged the directors to give the principal secretaries in the ministry the support they require for them to work well. Isaboke emphasised the need for commitment in achieving the set targets, which he noted should deliver SMART national objectives.
“We are here to serve the public by delivering what we promised Kenyans,” he said.
Tanui said the ministry will set targets that are realistic and achievable.
