Presidential Taskforce on the Development of Kenya Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park has commenced discussion on development of the proposed National Museum and Science Park in Kalokol, Turkana Central Sub-county.
The project is a collaboration between the county government, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and several national government department.
The team was hosted by Deputy Governor John Erus in Lodwar. The taskforce, was established last year by President William Ruto.
The 17-day exercise will include conducting a preliminary reconnaissance survey, assessing the condition of roads and evaluating the status of water sources in the areas.
Speaking when he received the team, Dr Erus said, “There is need to create opportunities from the available resources in the region and create infrastructure that will benefit the local community.”
He also highlighted the importance of community engagement, stating that public participation is key in the success of the initiative.
“Water is the county’s top agenda and ensuring that water systems function properly and will not only support livelihoods but also help reduce poverty,” he said.
The taskforce team leader, Major Josphat Miguna of the KDF, reassured of their commitment to the project until its completion. NMK scientist, Samuel Muteti, said the survey assessment would determine how to link many other prehistoric sites in the country to the museum and science park.
Other speakers included, Acting County Secretary Joseph Nyanga, Chief Officer for Urban Areas Management Peter Lomorukai and Director for Survey Joseph Egiron.
They reiterated that public participation is critical as the community needed to understand the benefits of the project, which also includes facilitating their land registration process. The deputy governor urged the taskforce to commence the project as soon as the land was availed.
“The project connectivity with Marsabit, also with prehistoric sites, will offer a greater experience to the tourists visiting the region,” he said.
Other representatives from the national and county government departments of Lands, Water and Roads were also present.
