Athletes participating in various disciplines have been advised to pursue their studies to the highest level possible to benefit from government opportunities as well as sponsorships from both local and international brands.

Speaking during the Central Region Cross Country Championship at Kerugoya Stadium, Athletics Kenya (AK) Central Region Chair David Miano, since education is just as important as talent as both benefit an athlete in different ways.

In recent years, semi-literate athletes have been lured into signing exploitative contracts by rogue international agents. As a result of their low education capacity, quite a number of them have found themselves exposed to banned psychotropic substances that in the long run negatively affect their sports careers.

The pursuit of quick riches has killed careers of promising athletes prematurely, he said.n

Miano noted that the majority of today’s competitors are young and warned them not to abandon education in pursuit of wealth from sports alone. The AK chief explained that knowledge is vital to manage financial gains and to work effectively with multinational corporations keen to invest in athletics.

On doping, Miano cautioned athletes against consuming supplements without medical consultation, noting that the local market is largely unregulated and could easily expose them to banned substances. He advised athletes to always declare their status when seeking treatment in health facilities.

The AK official also told participants to give their best that will uplift Kenya’s reputation in the global sports arena, citing the country’s recent strong performance at the World Championships in Tokyo.

He told sports officials the importance of safeguarding athletes, particularly young women who may be vulnerable to exploitation by individuals seeking to take advantage of their success and wealth.

Nyandarua County Youth and Sports Chief Officer Edward Kigo reaffirmed the county’s commitment to sponsoring athletes and partnering with Athletics Kenya to promote talent development across the region.

The championship brought together teams from Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Nyandarua counties. A selected regional team will represent Central at the national cross-country championships in Eldoret later this year.

Competitors participated in the 10 kilometres senior men and women races, 8 kilometres under 20 men, 6 kilometres under 20 women and a 2 kilometres loop for men and women.
