There is need for Kenya to equip and put more emphasis on technical training to address challenges of phenomenal unemployment among youth.
The call was made during a “Training of Trainers Workshop” in Trans Nzoia County by experts from Pratham International, India, who called for revamping of technical.
The team led by Head of International Programmes Rohit Shide underlined the importance of practical learning in vocational training, explaining that it elevates the sector above other levels of training.
The Trainers of Trainers were taken through a thorough training with a special focus on hands on approach in key technical areas such as plumbing, tailoring and masonry among others and thus equipped with effective strategies to make lessons more practical, enjoyable and impactful to learners.
“For trainees to truly understand and apply technical skills, the learning process must be practical, simple and enjoyable. The trainer must break down the content and adapt to each learner’s level,” Shide said.
Citing India’s experience, the expert noted that despite the country’s youthful population of over 371 million, investment in technical training and practical skills has played key role in addressing the challenge of unemployment suggesting that once emulated in Kenya, it can help transform the country to higher levels of development.
“Many of our youth are now self-employed and actively contributing to the economy through value added crafts and other skilled trades. Kenya can achieve similar results if practical learning is well-implemented,” he added.
Dr Utkarsh Shrivastava who was one of the facilitators urged trainers to be more sensitive to the unique challenges faced by vocational learners, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“A trainer is more than just a teacher since to some of these young people, you are their only hope. Your ability to make the classroom a place of joy and understanding is crucial,” he said adding that once Kenya fully embraces technical training, the issue of unemployment and the challenges it comes with will be effectively addressed.
