Office of Kenya’s Attorney General has called on couples married through customary traditions to formally register their unions and obtain marriage certificates.
Attorney General Dorcas Oduor emphasised that the registrar of marriages has offices in every county and is ready to serve couples seeking to legalise their unions.
Speaking in Kisumu County during a government outreach programme held on August 15-16 at Kibigori Secondary School in Muhoroni Sub-County, Oduor stressed that it was important to register marriages to make them formal.
During the occasion, a significant milestone unfolded in recognising customary unions when the OAG officials officiated the registration of a traditional customary marriage for a polygamous man, where both of his wives were issued with marriage certificates.
Today we have witnessed the Office of the attorney general administer the registration of a polygamous marriage in this region. We want to assure Kenyans that our offices are open and ready to provide these services,” Oduor said.
Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, speaking at the event, echoed the call for couples married traditionally to visit office of the attorney general offices and formalise their unions.
“We have seen a polygamous man officially registered with his wives, and all received marriage certificates. This is an important step toward ensuring legal recognition of such marriages,” Mose said.
The outreach programme was graced by several leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Ouma Oluga and Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili.
