Plans are complete for the commissioning of ultra-modern Isiolo export abattoir by President William Ruto’s official next month.
Senior Presidential Advisor on Food Security and Animal Production Dominic Menjo said the facility will be a key catalyst to transforming Kenya’s livestock sector and unlocking economic potential of arid and semi-arid (ASALs) regions that make up more than three-quarters of Kenya’s landmass.
Dr Menjo said the government’s commitment to commercialising the livestock value chain by transitioning from the export of live animals to value-added products, including processed meat and leather destined for premium regional and international markets.
“The Isiolo Export Abattoir is a strategic investment that will strengthen food security, create employment and enhance incomes across Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands,” Menjo said.
Dr Menjo underlined the critical role of stakeholder collaboration in ensuring the successful operationalization of the facility. He noted that the food systems resilience project supports investments that improve livestock productivity, strengthen market systems and build resilient livelihoods for pastoral communities.
The meeting also highlighted the government’s plan to establish County Livestock Investment Companies in 21 ASAL counties, supporting over 350,000 pastoralists through structured cooperatives while enhancing access to markets, veterinary services, cold-chain infrastructure, fodder reserves and extension support provided by 2,000 agripreneurs.
The presidential visit is expected to mark a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to operationalise the Isiolo Export Abattoir, reinforcing Kenya’s vision of developing a globally competitive livestock industry that delivers sustainable economic growth and improved livelihoods for pastoral communities.
