Siaya Governor James Orengo is calling for firm action against Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga for making what he termed as outrageous, inexcusable and hateful speech.

Orengo who was accompanied by several elected leaders from Bungoma and Migori counties said a “mere apology and resignation from the position of vice chair of council of governors was not sufficient to atone governor Kahiga’s sin.”

Speaking at Kang’o ka Jaramogi – the rural home of departed former prime minister Raila Odinga – where he and widow of former Prime Minister Ida Odinga continued to receive delegations of mourners, Orengo said Kahiga’s widely quoted speech was a violation of several articles of the constitution and in particular, article 73 that requires those in public office to act in a manner that brings honour to their offices.

“A mere apology may not be enough. The council of governors has acted promptly but, in my view, a mere resignation from the post of the vice chairman of the council is insufficient to atone for his sins,” Orengo said.

He said Kenyans cannot have a united, indivisible nation when leaders continue to spew hatred. “Kenyans are not going to entertain this kind of talk,” he said adding, “I hope that this is not going to be the end of the matter. Further serious steps must still be taken.”

On their part, Governor Lusaka and his Migori counterpart Ochilo Ayako who led delegations from their counties to pay homage to the former premier’s grave, described Kahiga’s utterances as ‘un-African’.

In a press statement, however, Kahiga apologised for the remarks he made over the demise of Odinga noting that his statements were his own and did not represent any community nor a political affiliation.

Meanwhile, as the country mourns and the orange party faces a unity test just days after the burial of the former premier, Awendo lawmaker Walter Owino called on all the leaders within the ODM to honour Mr Odinga by ensuring that the party remains united.

Owino called on all the leaders with the dreams of occupying leadership positions to tone down and champion for unity above other interests.
