Kiambu County residents have every reason to rejoice after President William Ruto’s cabinet approved the Ksh38.7 billion duelling of the 23.5-kilometre Pangani-Muthaiga-Kiambu-Ndumberi road project.

The new road, long demanded by commuters, aims to eliminate the endless traffic jams that have turned daily travel between Kiambu and Nairobi into a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the existing two-lane B32 road will be upgraded to a four-lane dual carriageway with two-lane service roads, pedestrian walkways and six footbridges to enhance safety in busy areas like Ridgeways, Thindigua and Kiambu Town.

Financed through a Ksh38.7 billion loan from China’s Exim Bank, the project will be implemented under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract over 36 months, followed by a 24-month defects liability period.

The redesigned road will cover three sections Muthaiga to Kirigiti Junction, Kirigiti Junction through Kiambu Town to the Governor’s Office and Governor’s Office to Ndumberi near Sasini Estate. It begins at Pangani, stretching past Muthaiga Golf Club, Ridgeways, Windsor and Runda then to Ndumberi.

Several new bridges and overpasses will be constructed at Muthaiga Golf Club Spur, Mua Road, DCI, Coffee Garden, Tala Road, Ridgeways and Runda U-turn and Kirigiti Junction. Full interchanges at Kamiti Road, Banana Road and Northern Bypass will further reduce traffic stops.

To ease congestion in Kiambu Town, two bypasses Githunguri Road-Sasini-Boma Road and Riabai–Kirigiti B Road will divert long-distance and heavy vehicles away from the central market and matatu stages, allowing smoother local movement through service roads.

KeNHA noted that feeder roads such as Ridgeways Road to Thika Road, Evergreen-UN Avenue, Wambui Road, Muthaiga North and KIST Junction to Kamiti Road will also be improved, complete with pavements, lighting and bus bays.

“We have waited for this project for years. It will completely change transport in Kiambu and make commuting to Nairobi much faster,” said Jane Muthoni, a matatu operator based in Thindigua.

David Njoroge, a traffic officer on Kiambu road noted, “Managing traffic here has always been very challenging, especially during morning and evening rush hours. This project will reduce congestion and make our work easier,”

KeNHA has assured the public that the road will remain operational during construction, though motorists should expect temporary disruptions in Ridgeways and Kiambu Town. Once completed, the dual carriageway is expected to ease congestion, enhance safety, and boost Kiambu’s economic growth.
